Again the tres amigos, Leonard, Callie, and I, climb another mountain: the Cable Car Mountain or more formally Fløya. This mountain is located west of Tromsdalstinden, the beast the three of us climber on August 19. Although there is a cable car that goes up the mountain to a plateau region, we decided to hike up to get a good workout. Plus, you had to pay to ride the cable car.
The beginning of the trail heads south on the mountainside into the woods. At first the trail was a gradual climb, but after the first half hour, it became very steep. The path was slippery because the footing was sand that had become loose from the rain this week. Since the trail was so steep, we had to stop every now and again for mini breaks in order to catch our breath.
While on the trail we passed a couple that was hiking. The couple had two young children, each being carried on their backs in a child-carrier thing. I thought it was tiring just hiking up this steep trail, I couldn’t image how exhausting it would be hiking this same trail while carrying a child on my back. Just goes to show that Norwegians are tough and have a love for the outdoors.

Panorama view of the island Tromsøya |
It was a beautiful morning for hiking and once we passed the tree line I could see amazing views of the island Tromsøya. At the plateau we saw many people walking along the side of the mountain. The cable car would be a great way for the handicapped, elderly, or children to reach the plateau. On the plateau it is easy to explore and walk with almost no incline. There is even a building with a restaurant at this point.

Me standing on the pile of rocks marking the summit |
From here, we continued to climb to the summit. If you haven’t noticed thus far from my pictures, each summit is marked with a pile of rocks. By the main pile of rocks is a box that contains a book. In the book you sign your name and include the date. After taking in the beautiful scenery, all three of us signed the book. It was an exciting moment; I felt like I had climbed Mt. Everest or K-2 even though this mountain is nothing compared to either one.
The top of the mountain was freezing. Signing the book was a challenge because my hands were so cold. After a few more minutes of admiring the scenery, we headed down the mountain. The Cable Car Mountain was easier than the two previous ones we had done, but it was still a workout. I plan on climbing it again in the next couple weeks.
Before heading home, we stopped at the Saturday market. At the market I picked up some cheap carrots, potatoes, and bananas. I love the market here.
